The Kinren clan is an ancient family of kitsunes that are widely renowned for their expertise in magic and innate sorcery. The latest generation of the Kinren clan includes 9 children with tails ranging from 1-9. Tetsuo is the youngest, but became a wizard after his innate sorcery was stolen away shortly after he was born (The family didn't know this). In the continent of Covenant, where the story takes place, Kitsunes don't grow tails with power, instead the number of tails you get at birth is believed to determine how much power/potential you have. More tails equals more rarity, power, and potential. Emi, being the second oldest, having 8 tails, and groomed throughout her life to be the future head of the Kinren clan, sees Tetsuo's inability to cast sorcery while still having 9 tails both as a disgrace to the family she cares for deeply and damaging pride to herself, for having a member of the family have more tails than her without having any innate magic.
Emi has two siblings, an older brother with 6 tails named Bubba (Buh-Buh), and a younger sister with 3 tails named Ayako. Her parents were traveling adventurers that specialized in exploring more dangerous, magic filled environments. The mother, having suffered sustainable damage from an area of unstable magic while unknowingly pregnant, gave birth to Bubba. Bubba, although powerful, was born deformed and unstable by the wild magic that shot through his mother. Terrified, outraged, and mentally broken from giving birth to a "monster" as the family's first child of the next generation she turned to faith and praying. Afterward the mother soon got pregnant and began praying day and night to the god of balance for the next child to be "the perfect head of the family that all could look up to". It seems the gods heard her cries as, when she was finally born, Emi was born with divine strength in her veins. An entity of perfect balance both visually and magically. As time went on, and the rest of her cousins were born into the world, she was groomed to be a "Little Miss Perfect" by her now mentally unstable parents in order to become the next family head.
As years went by and the next generation of Kinrens finally set out to the world, Emi learned valuable lessons to become a better person, leader, and even head of her family all outside the strangling grasp of her parents. Eventually, after many adventures and working with the other cousins, Tetsuo and Emi finally decide to settle their differences and start over after years of cycling abuse, torment, and unspoken words.
